BIO

Jamal Washington, a resident of Merrillville was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. "I attended Lew Wallace High School until my family moved to Dolton, Illinois where I graduated from Thorn Ridge High School. My major in college was Business Management and Management Information Systems. I also received certification from the Gates Foundation as a Microsoft Software Specialist and pursued advanced accounting courses during my enlistment in the United States Army Reserves.

My career path took several twists and turns before becoming a public servant.  My desire to help people and my thrist for learning led me to work in the medical field as an Emergency Medical Technician. It was after working closely with former mayors William Shaw and Rudy Clay, I became passionate about community service. I have extensive experience in government operations, management and budget preparation.

 

As the IT Chief I saved the cities of Dolton, IL and Gary, IN over 10 million dollars. I also, implemented the 'Free Cell' phone initiative program in Lake County for the elderly and those in need who could not afford the outreach.  I worked as the Community Relations Director for Indiana Central School Transportation Company where I was promoted within a few months to Senior Contract Manager .

 

As a dedicated, hard worker, I worked continuously to ensure that over 7,000 students and their parents have dependable and safe transportation to and from school. One of my most proud accomplishments was improving the quality of student transportation service by over 100% in the past year as evident by the parent responses.

 

Lastly, I was awarded the 2013 South Shore Leadership Center’s “LEADERS AS HEROES” award for my devoted advocacy for the children."
